Leeds United player Illan Meslier aims dig at Man Utd while naming his goalkeeping idol

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has named Edwin van der Sar as his all-time Premier League goalkeeping hero, whilst still managing to aim a dig at Manchester United.

Van der Sar played for two different English top-flight sides - Fulham and Man United in his 21-year professional career.

The retired Dutch shot-stopper enjoyed his main success at Old Trafford, where he spent six years and in that time, he was part of a team that won the Premier League four times, the League Cup once, the Champions League once and the FIFA Club World Cup once.

The ex-Manchester United goalkeeper was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year three times after his displays in the 2006/07, 2008/09 and 2010/11 seasons, as well as winning the Golden Glove in the 2008/09 campaign.

It's no surprise that Meslier looks up to van der Sar - who is now working as the chief executive of another one of his former teams Ajax.

The Leeds star has been at Elland Road since initially signing on loan from Lorient back in August 2019 and the Frenchman finished the season as Marcelo Bielsa's first-choice due to an eight-game suspension for Kiko Casilla.

Meslier's performances helped the Whites gain promotion back to the Premier League, and the 20-year-old's performances earned him a permanent deal in Yorkshire and he has started the 2020/21 season in fine form for Bielsa's team, keeping two clean sheets so far.

Speaking to Leeds' official Twitter account, Meslier was asked about his Premier League goalkeeping hero, and replied: "Who is? I remember van der Sar at Manchester United.

I think it's this, but it's not a good team. It's van der Sar.

"I remember we have the same profile, we are tall, but he has good reflexes, he takes a lot of space in the goal. I remember this goalkeeper."

Meslier is likely to be in action for Leeds this weekend, as the Whites look to bounce back from the 4-1 defeat to Leicester City with three points at Crystal Palace.
