Leeds United plan shock Aston Villa transfer with £7.5m bid prepared - reports

Aston Villa defender James Chester is wanted by Leeds United in the summer transfer window.

The Daily Star reports that the 30-year-old has emerged as a possible replacement for Pontus Jansson at Elland Road.

Jansson was sold to Championship rivals Brentford earlier this month and Marcelo Bielsa is eyeing the Welshman as he seeks a quality centre-back.

Chester is currently out in America with the Aston Villa squad and he has established himself as a fan favourite with his no-nonsense displays as Villa won promotion back to the Premier League last season.

However Dean Smith has added Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause, after successful loan spells last term, and further additions in the form of Bjorn Engels and Ezri Konsa with competition building in defence.

That has raised question marks over the future of Chester who is having to indefinitely manage a knee injury picked up on international duty last year.

“With the rest I’ve had since the end of January, the injury has improved an awful lot,” Chester said earlier this month.

“I’m not dealing with any pain at the moment. That’s a huge bonus but with the type of injury it is it will need monitoring and perhaps I won’t train as much as I always have done, to prolong my career.”

The latest report suggests that Leeds would be willing to £7.5m to land Chester who is still thought to be part of Dean Smith's plans at Villa Park.
