Leeds United pay tribute to Marius Zaliukas after former defender dies aged 36

Leeds United have paid tribute to their former defender Marius Zaliukas, who has died at the age of 36.

The Lithuanian Football Federation have confirmed that the centre-back who won 25 international caps, has passed away in a statement on their website.

"Marius Zaliukas represented the Lithuanian national team from 2006 to 2016 and managed to score one goal," the statement read.

“Marius inspired countless young footballers, and his contribution to Lithuanian football will never be forgotten.

“On behalf of the Lithuanian football community, we express our deepest condolences to Marius’ family.”

Zaliukas had a short stint at Leeds United in the 2013-14 season, turning out 15 times for the club under Brian McDermott, before he joined Rangers for the 2014-15 campaign.

The defender achieved his greatest success during a seven-year spell at Heart of Midlothian, where he won the Scottish Cup in 2012.

Leeds paid their respects to their former player with a short statement on Twitter

"The thoughts of everyone at Leeds United are with the friends and family of former defender Marius Žaliūkas who has sadly passed away at 36," it read.
