Leeds United parade update as council bosses speak out on celebration plans

An open-top bus parade and a city-wide party to celebrate Leeds United winning the Championship is "simply not possible at this time".

That's the message from Leeds City Council after Marcelo Bielsa's side won the league title and secured promotion to the Premier League after a 16 year absence.

Thousands of fans took part in impromptu celebrations outside Elland Road and in Millennium Square over the weekend, after their side won their first piece of silverware in 28 years.

However, the council did say the historic title win will be celebrated "as soon as it is safe to do so" but it's impossible to organise one now because of the coronavirus pandemic.

A council spokesman said: “We are absolutely delighted with Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League and are extremely disappointed that the current situation with coronavirus means that a city-wide event, such as a parade, is simply not possible at this time.

“We would like to reassure fans that, as soon as it is safe to do so, Leeds United’s promotion will be marked in a way that recognises the team’s fantastic achievement and this will include a Civic Reception.

“Until then, we ask people to please stay safe and look after themselves and each other.”

Earlier this week, the council asked fans not to stage another large party until coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

Cllr Mohammed Rafique, the council's executive member for environment, said: “We know how important a return to the Premier League for Leeds United is, not just for the fans, but for everyone associated with the city, and there will be, of course, a desire to celebrate.

"We are however, as a city, continuing to tackle coronavirus, and it is absolutely vital therefore that people do not seek to replicate what we saw in Millennium Square or in any other venue in the upcoming days.

"Guidance regarding coronavirus is in place to ensure that people’s health and wellbeing, and that of others, continues to be protected, and that must remain the primary concern at this time."

Fans also left a huge amount of rubbish behind after the celebrations and several police officers were left injured - including one female officer who suffered a serious head injury.
