Leeds United on the verge of a Premier League record ahead of Saints and their unknown quantity

The Unknown Quantity

Leeds United could face Ghanaian central defender Mohammed Salisu at Elland Road this evening, which could spring a surprise for Marcelo Bielsa and his analysis team.

Salisu is a relatively unknown quantity, having played just a single season of top flight football last year with Real Valladolid.

Since his arrival last summer, Southampton have been well-stocked at centre-back and the 21-year-old has hardly had a look-in.

That has changed in the past few games, and a Man of the Match display against Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea means it is likely he will continue in the team in West Yorkshire.

The Potential Record

So far this season, Leeds United have outran every opponent they have faced in the Premier League - except Southampton.

The Saints have gotten away with playing Leeds United so far due to a rearranged FA Cup tie, but this evening presents Leeds with the opportunity to have conquered each of their 19 Premier League counterparts - in the running stakes at least.

It could be a harder contest than many think though, especially in this department, given Ralph Hasenhuttl men are almost - but not quite - as effective at pressing their opponents high up the pitch as Leeds.

It will be a interesting contest nonetheless.

The Free-Kick Specialist

Leeds may want to avoid giving away free-kicks in dangerous areas this evening, as England's James Ward-Prowse will be on the prowl for dead-ball opportunities to rifle into Illan Meslier's net.

Only Eberechi Eze has found the net from a direct free-kick against Leeds this season, but it was a particularly well-struck effort. Ward-Prowse is an expert in this field, having scored 10 of his 27 Premier League goals from free-kicks.

It is an astounding record, and he has form for it recently, too. Ward-Prowse bent one into the top corner against Newcastle United not so long ago, meaning he could well be in the mood if Leeds allow him the chance.

The Formation Change

Southampton's formation which usually consists of two strikers means Marcelo Bielsa is likely to amend his tactical setup in order to combat Hasenhuttl's approach.

Bielsa prefers to maintain a man advantage at the back, therefore two opposition strikers - likely to be Danny Ings and Che Adams - means Leeds will field three central defenders.

It could signal a recall for Diego Llorente, or it could mean Pascal Struijk reprises his role in his preferred position for another gameweek.
