Leeds United on pace to break long-standing defensive record

When a Leeds United fan had a feeling they were seeing something pretty special from Leeds United's defence this season, they decided to have a deep dive into the numbers and see how it compares to successful second-tier teams of the past.

What Reddit user AristotleGrumpus found is that Leeds are on course to set a pretty spectacular record if they can maintain the same defensive strength they have shown so far this season.

Leeds United are currently on course to concede the fewest goals in the second tier since the creation of the Premier League in 1992.

The Whites have conceded just 10 goals in 17 matches, a rate of 0.588 goals conceded so far this season. If they keep up the same rate, they will let in 27 goals over the 46 matches.

Almost half of Leeds United's games so far this season have ended with a clean sheet (eight out of 17).

The record is current held by Sunderland who let in just 28 goals in the 1998/99 season, a rate of 0.608 goals conceded per game. In 2001/02, West Brom let in just 29 goals and Preston conceded 30 four seasons later.

This season, after Leeds, the best defensive record in the Championship is jointly held by Nottingham Forest and Brentford who have conceded 13 goals.

The team who has conceded the most goals is bottom-of-the-table Barnsley who have shipped 36 goals - more than three times more than Leeds.
