Leeds United news with Tottenham tipped for 'bargain' move amid Illan Meslier links

A round-up of the latest Leeds United headlines this evening, Sunday, March 19.

Tottenham tipped for 'bargain' move for Leeds United's Illan Meslier

Former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie believes £30million for a goalkeeper would represent a bargain bit of business for Tottenham Hotspur amid links to Leeds United's Illan Meslier. Spurs have been linked with a move for the young French shot stopper, who is viewed as a long-term successor for Hugo Lloris.

“They are acting like a big club but they are doing everything except spend money like a big club," McAvennie told Football Insider when asked about Spurs signing a new goalkeeper. That is down to Daniel Levy.

"I do not for one minute believe that they do not have any money, so go and spend it. It is not even his money. Daniel Levy does not own Tottenham, it is Joe Lewis’ money.

“If you own a club you want to get the best players and you are not going to get them at cut rates. Spurs have got to do that, they have never ever done it.

“Spending £30m on a goalkeeper, it is nothing. The big clubs will spend £80-£100m on a goalkeeper. In today’s world it has to be done.“

Rasmus Kristensen on ‘tough week’ after silencing Denmark doubters with first Leeds United goal

Rasmus Kristensen has admitted being dropped from the Denmark squad hurt after scoring his first Leeds United goal. An announcement in midweek confirmed the 25-year-old will miss upcoming clashes against Finland and Denmark.

A lack of first-team opportunities at Leeds forced Danish coach Kasper Hjulmand to drop Kristensen, who has 13 international caps. The right-back, signed last summer from Red Bull Salzburg, has not started a game since the clash against Manchester City on December 28.

However, Kristensen was called into action from the bench just days after suffering his international setback. Javi Gracia’s faith was repaid as the defender put in arguably his best performance in a Whites shirt.

Maximilian Wober ‘relieved’ and urges Leeds United players to continue Premier League fight

Maximilian Wober acknowledged the relief around West Yorkshire after Leeds United ground out a vital Premier League win. A colossal three points at Molineux lifted the Whites above the relegation zone, their second victory in 14 attempts.

It would not be Leeds without having to face some adversary and, with 17 minutes to go, the game looked ominous. Despite winning 3-0 at one stage, Wolves had just pulled two quick-fire goals back and momentum was in their favour.

But a red card for Jonny helped calm the nerves and Rodrigo ultimately put the bed with a fourth in stoppage time. Jubilant Leeds supporters travelled home celebrating their first win on the road since October.

Leeds United post-match footage highlights how much Wolverhampton Wanderers win means

Leeds United’s media team captured the moment victorious players returned to Molineux’s away dressing room. A combination of relief and jubilation was etched onto the Whites’ squad faces after they ground out a pivotal away win.

In typical Leeds fashion, they had to win the hard way. A three-goal lead put United into the driving seat with just under half an hour remaining.

However, Wolverhampton Wanderers scored two in quick fashion - with the away end anticipating the worst. But Leeds dug deep and, buoyed by Jonny’s late red card, managed to score a fourth in stoppage time to put the game to bed.

Leeds United win 'chaotic and thrilling' Wolves verdict from national media

A look at how the national press reacted to Leeds United’s thrilling 4-2 win.

Costa the peacemaker

Tom Collomosse for the Daily Mail noted the irony of Diego Costa, renowned for his fiery streak, acting as the mediator during Wolverhampton Wanderers’ post-match fury. He wrote: “When Diego Costa is acting as peacemaker, you know things really have gone out of control.

“The Wolves forward has spent his career ready to start a fight in a phone box but this time he was restraining Matheus Nunes, a fellow unused substitute, who had just been shown a red card and was preparing to turn his fury on referee Michael Salisbury.

Julen Lopetegui’s VAR criticism blasted as Wolves told they're ‘lucky’ following Leeds United loss

Match of the Day pundits Ashley Williams and Dion Dublin have slammed Julen Lopetegui for his post-match fury towards referee Michael Salisbury. VAR was called into action on several occasions during the thrilling 4-2 Leeds United victory.

With the Whites winning 1-0, Wolverhampton Wanderers felt they should have had a penalty when Junior Firpo challenged Nelson Semedo inside the box. Salisbury waved play on and VAR agreed with his on-field decision.

Later on, Jonny was dismissed for a studs-up tackle on Luke Ayling - a call Lopetegui claimed Wolves may appeal. The dismissal came shortly after Craig Dawson avoided punishment for a similar tackle on Jack Harrison.
