Leeds United news as Whites warned Scott Parker appointment would be 'a huge gamble'

Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Friday, June 9.

Palmer fires Leeds United Parker warning

Former Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer has warned Leeds United that appointing Scott Parker as their new head coach would be a 'huge gamble.' Ex-Fulham and Bournemouth boss Parker is one of a number of names to be linked with the vacant post at Elland Road, with the club currently waiting for their ownership situation to be resolved before making an appointment following Sam Allardyce's departure earlier this month.

Despite winning promotion from the Championship with both the Cherries and the Cottagers, Palmer does not believe Parker is the right man for the Elland Road job.

"On both of these occasions, he had one of the biggest budgets in the league," the former England international told Football League World.

"He got Fulham promoted, then relegated and Bournemouth sacked him after four [league] games into last season after they were promoted, and after a defeat to Liverpool.

"He publicly slammed his owners, and that wasn't a good look. That was the reason he was sacked. He's recently been sacked again by Club Brugge after 67 days in charge.

"Personally, with Leeds looking to make an immediate return to the Premier League, I think Scott would be a huge gamble at this particular juncture."

Man City fans' classy tribute praised

A pair of Manchester City fans have been praised by Leeds United supporters for paying a touching tribute to Chris Loftus and Kevin Speight in Istanbul ahead of this weekend's Champions League final.

City face Internazionale on Saturday and the supporters' classy gesture saw them lay down flowers, a Leeds United scarf and photographs of the pair of Whites fans who were tragically murdered in Taksim Square prior to Leeds' UEFA Cup semi-final against Galatasaray in April 2000.

This tribute was warmly received on social media by Leeds fans, who praised the City supporters ahead of their side's attempt to win their first Champions League title and with it, a landmark treble.

West Brom's Corberan stance

Former Leeds United under-23s boss Carlos Corberan continues to be linked with the vacant Whites head coach job, as everyone at Elland Road awaits the next development in the proposed takeover from 49ers Enterprises.

Leeds have been somewhat in limbo since the season ended and they parted ways with Sam Allardyce, with a decision on who will replace the former Bolton boss on hold until the club's ownership situation is resolved. A host of names have been linked with the post, with Corberan, who was also on Marcelo Bielsa's first-team staff, having been at or around the top of the bookmakers' lists since the campaign ended.

Corberan was hired at West Brom last October and added to his growing reputation by lifting the Baggies out of the relegation zone and making a push for the Championship playoffs. This came after a short stint at Olympiacos which followed a spell at Huddersfield Town in which he reached the play-off final.

The 40-year-old's managerial progress and his links to Leeds United made him an obvious name to be linked and recent upheaval at West Brom has been fuel to that particular fire. The Baggies have confirmed that chief executive Ron Gourlay will leave his role next week, with a reshuffle taking place in the boardroom.
