Leeds United news as Wayne Rooney makes Whites dig in his Derby County blueprint

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Monday January 18th.

Rooney doesn't want 'to be a Leeds'

Wayne Rooney's managerial career began in earnest at the weekend, as his Derby County side lost 1-0 to Rotherham United in their first match since the former Manchester United man was confirmed as the club's permanent boss.

The Rams currently sit second-from-bottom in the Championship, 31 places below Leeds United in the league system.

Despite Leeds' success in getting out of the second tier and establishing themselves in the middle of the Premier League pack, Rooney is not looking at Marcelo Bielsa for inspiration.

"I want my team playing with energy, I want my team playing with a belief in terms of winning every game," he said following the Millers defeat when asked about his philosophy in the job. " That's the mentality I need to change in the players.

Does no goals in three games worry Bielsa?

"Attacking but with composure as well. I don't want the team to be a Leeds, for instance, I want to have a good balance. I don't want the players scared to make mistakes. I want them to play with freedom.

"I have signed for two and a half years to put my philosophy on the team."

Traore a non-starter

There are two weeks of the January transfer window remaining and, as expected, Leeds United have had a quiet window so far.

Fresh loan moves for some of the squad's talented youngsters have been the limit of Leeds' activity so far this month and many of the rumours doing the rounds are fanciful at best.

Wolves winger  Adama Traore  has been linked with the club, but a move is not expected.

Much of those links can be attributed back to Director of Football  Victor Orta's quotes  regarding the Spaniard when he was signed for Middlesbrough.

Leeds' Brighton xG woes

Leeds now have a gap of ten days in which to assess Saturday's defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion before they play again.

The loss was Leeds' third on the spin as Bielsa's side were uncharacteristically blunt up front, failing to create anything like the number of chances we have come to expect this season.

In fact, their xG of just 0.31 was their lowest of the season, as Joe Donnohue points out here, with a smart tactical innovation from Seagulls boss Graham Potter the reason why.

Next up for Leeds is a trip to out-of-sorts Newcastle United on Tuesday January 26 after the Whites' clash against Southampton that was originally due to be played tomorrow night was postponed in order for Saints to play in the FA Cup.
