Leeds United news as UEFA president apologises for error, goalkeeper receives LaLiga offer

Here are your Leeds United evening headlines for Friday, July 9.

UEFA president admits error

Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin has admitted that he would not advocate a repeat of Euro 2020, where the tournament is spread across several nations.

England play Italy in Sunday's final at Wembley after a championship that has been played in cities in 11 countries and Ceferin now believes the format was a mistake.

"I would not support it anymore," Ceferin told BBC Sport.

"In a way, it is not correct that some teams have to travel more than 10,000km while others have to only travel 1,000km.

"It is not fair to fans, who had to be in Rome one day and in Baku over the next few, which is a four and a half hour flight.

"We had to travel a lot, into countries with different jurisdictions, different currencies, countries in the European Union (EU) and Non-EU, so it was not easy.

"It was a format that was decided before I came [into post] and I respect it. It is an interesting idea but it is hard to implement and I don't think we will do it again."

Casilla exit

Spanish newspaper AS have claimed Kiko Casilla is on the verge of joining LaLiga outfit Elche from Leeds United this summer.

They claim Casilla has already agreed a deal in principle with Elche, it now remains to be seen whether he will be allowed to join the club on a free transfer after terminating his Leeds contract, or arrive on loan with an option to buy.

Casilla has been restricted to fleeting appearances at Elland Road since his FA-sanctioned ban in 2020 and Illan Meslier's rise to prominence between the posts.

The 34-year-old's contract expires in 2023 which is one reason for the delay in arranging Casilla's exit as there will likely be some compensation paid by the club if a mutual termination agreement can be reached.

Orta's next transfer mission

Nowadays it's not so strange to see Leeds United linked with a promising up-and-comer. That wasn't always the case, though.

Throughout the 2020/21 Premier League campaign, Leeds appeared relatively comfortable, wedged in mid-table, shoehorning themselves back into footballing relevance after a 16-year exile from the top flight.

With top division status comes a barrage of transfer links, most of which prove to be column inch filler and white noise.

The way in which Leeds conducted the signing of Barcelona full-back Junior Firpo this summer is an indication of how cloak-and-dagger the club operate in the transfer market - and justifiably so.

Clubs loathe to alert rivals to their transfer intentions; the fear of being beaten to a signing is very much a reality, because when negotiations are leaked, bidding wars ensue and prices are driven up.
