Leeds United news as Roy Keane delivers bewildering criticism of Kalvin Phillips

Here are your Leeds United morning headlines for Thursday, July 8.

Keane delivers harsh criticism

Roy Keane believes Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice aren't technically gifted in possession despite England's 2-1 win over Denmark to reach the final of Euro 2020.

The Three Lions came from a goal down at Wembley to beat the Danes in extra time, with Harry Kane scoring the winning goal.

Phillips played the full 120 minutes, whilst Rice made way for Henderson after the 90 minutes and despite their heroic performances, Keane was harsh with his appraisal.

“I think the two lads in midfield gave them a lot (of energy)," Keane told ITV Sport.

“Even when they are not technically that great on the ball.

“They give them great protection to the back four. So, you can look at what you want from your team and England have a bit of everything.

“Defensively, they have been very, very good. They have energy. They have a world-class striker. People like Sterling, who is on fire. They have got strength in depth.

“And when you are playing at home, with the fans behind you, it gives you a great chance.”

Ashley Cole apology

The narrative surrounding Leeds United and England talisman Kalvin Phillips now is one of pride and satisfaction.

Coming into EURO 2020, there were concerns that with Jordan Henderson not fully fit, Kalvin Phillips would struggle to replicate the Liverpool captain's presence in the centre of midfield.

One such individual who harboured doubts over Phillips' top-level ability was former Derby County full-back Ashley Cole..

Speaking after England's historic semi-final win over Denmark, Ashley Cole told ITV he had to take a moment to pull Phillips to one side.

Phillips' tribute

England are in a major international final for the first time in 55 years, courtesy of a 2-1 extra-time victory over a plucky Danish side.

A Simon Kjaer own goal and Harry Kane rebound after he saw his penalty saved in extra-time, were enough to send England through.

However, the Three Lions did suffer a scare when Mikkel Damsgaard fired in a dipping free-kick early in the first half of normal time.

Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips took some time to grow into the game but his contributions increased as the game wore on and Danish legs succumbed to fatigue.

At full-time Kalvin Phillips was pictured adorning a new shirt, complete with his squad number: fourteen.
