Leeds United news as positive Patrick Bamford injury update emerges and Man City test previewed

A look at the latest Leeds United headlines on Thursday, 28 April.

Patrick Bamford will be 'on the pitch next week'

Patrick Bamford is expected to make a return for Leeds United 'next week' according to Jesse Marsch. The Whites boss believes this weekend's game against Manchester City will come too earlier for the striker.

However, they've also been dealt a blow to Crysencio Summerville whose season is over after picking up an ankle injury in the final training session before Leeds took on Crystal Palace. The Whites youngster was missing from the squad that travelled to Palace after twisting his ankle in training.

The Dutch youth international has been one of the breakthrough stars of the season and has been on the fringes of the first team throughout the campaign. However, he'll miss Leeds' final five games of the season.

Jesse Marsch insists Leeds not 'scarred' by 7-0 Man City thrashing as he details approach

Jesse Marsch claims his Leeds United side has not been left scarred by the 7-0 thrashing they suffered at the hands of Manchester City earlier in the campaign. Marcelo Bielsa's side were swatted aside as Pep Guardiola's side ran rampant against the Whites at the Etihad back in December.

Just one point separates City from Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title, while Leeds have a five-point gap to the bottom three. The Whites have a tough run of fixtures before they take on Brighton and Brentford in their final two games of the season.

They could be hauled back into a relegation battle if Everton and Burnley are able to close the gap in their remaining games. Marsch is under no illusion how tough it will be to pick up points against the 'best team in the world' this weekend.

Pep Guardiola's 'all or nothing' verdict which Jesse Marsch must rethink

Jesse Marsch was was seen as a natural successor to Marcelo Bielsa. The heir to the Argentine's throne has built up the reputation of high pressing, but efficient attacking play, with the seeds currently being sown at Elland Road.

The Whites are five points clear of the relegation zone before welcoming the league leaders to Elland Road this weekend. Whites' supporters need no reminding how the reverse fixture panned out at the Etihad earlier this season, with City blowing Bielsa's side out of the water in a 7-0 win.

Marsch knows his side cannot afford a repeat of that result which would decimate confidence heading into thee final run in. The Whites have been rejuvenated since the American's arrival and are in the midst of a five game unbeaten run which has given them a cushion to the bottom three.

Jesse Marsch on 'lop-sided' Premier League table and impact of Leeds United's 16-day break

Jesse Marsch admitted there were pros and cons to Leeds United's 16-day break prior to playing Crystal Palace. The Whites survived a late onslaught to maintain their five game unbeaten run, which also leaves them five points above the relegation zone.

Relegation rivals Everton have a game in hand on the Whites and could move to within two points depending on how results go between now and then. Marsch also claimed he had not seen a Premier League table look so 'lop-sided' so late in the season.

He told LUFC TV : “To be fair to Crystal Palace, they pushed the game, they came at us in a lot of different ways and were able to unbalance us. However, it was a night where we fought and we bent, but we didn’t break, which is the big thing."

Leeds United and Everton told why Burnley hold relegation advantage

After defeating Watford earlier in April, Leeds United looked like they had almost as a good as secured their Premier League status. That seemed all the more likely after Burnley lost to Norwich a day later.

However, Burnley sacked Sean Dyche and have incredibly picked up seven points in their three games in hand over the Whites, dragging Everton into the bottom three and moving to within three points of the Whites, with a significantly healthier goal difference. As such, the relegation battle is not over for Leeds and they have five difficult fixtures during which they must pick up enough points to stay ahead of at least one of Everton and Burnley.

According to Gabriel Agbonlahor, Burnley will pick up enough points to escape danger, so Jesse Marsch's side will have to ensure they are not the ones who the Clarets will stay up in expense of. Agbonlahor argued that the Burnley players would be fighting to maintain their Premier League wages and that their experience of previous relegation battles would work in their favour.
