Leeds United news as Marcelo Bielsa explains Gjanni Alioski turnaround

Here are the latest Leeds United morning headlines on Sunday, May 9.

Bielsa on Alioski turnaround

Eyebrows were raised among certain sections of the Leeds United fanbase when Marcelo Bielsa confirmed an unchanged XI to face Tottenham.

The same XI who slumped to a 2-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend were given the chance to redeem themselves and did just that, by turning in one of Leeds' best performances of the campaign.

Gjanni Alioski had a particularly torrid time on the south coast and was hooked at half-time, but responded in style on Saturday, turning in an excellent performance in which he kept Gareth Bale quiet.

Following the 3-1 victory Bielsa insisted that he had not given the Macedonian any special instructions following his disappointing performance against the Seagulls.

"No, he's a player with a lot of experience," Bielsa explained.

"He's been playing in the left full-back position for quite some time now and more than better or worse performances, he has clearly had a path which has been an ascension. He's improved a lot in the decision-making."

Alioski's contract at Elland Road expires at the end of the current campaign.

Talking points

Was that Leeds United's best performance of the season? How did the unchanged XI produced such a turnaround from last week's defeat? And did Raphinha set the table for a strong end to the season?

Our man Beren Cross witnessed the action at Elland Road and has delivered his five talking points here.

Record matched

Tottenham Hotspur were the latest of the so-called 'Big Six' sides to leave Elland Road with their tail between their legs on Saturday afternoon, when Ryan Mason's side slumped to a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United.

Stuart Dallas opened the scoring with 13 minutes on the clock and although the visitors were able to equalise through Son Heung-min, Patrick Bamford restored his side's advantage before the break, with substitute Rodrigo scored his first goal since December to seal what was an emphatic victory.

The win was enough to see Leeds move up to ninth in the Premier League table and also matched a decade-old top flight mark.
