Leeds United news as Liverpool make Kalvin Phillips transfer decision amid Man Utd interest

Here are your Leeds United morning headlines on Friday, October 29.

Man Utd and Liverpool battle for Phillips

Liverpool have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Leeds' Kalvin Phillips, according to the Daily Star.

The Red Devils have made a holding midfielder one of their priorities next summer and are keen to land the 25-year-old in a £60m deal.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp's men are also keeping tabs on Phillips and have registered their interest in him as they look to bolster their squad.

However, Leeds have reportedly opened talks to extend Phillips' contract and tie him down for the long-term, although his current deal doesn't run out until 2024.

It will be something that the Whites will want to get done sooner rather than later, which could help to fend off interest from the so-called 'big six'.

Phillips was an integral part of Leeds' ninth-place finish last season, before he started in all seven matches for England at Euro 2020.

Pundit backs Leeds

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has tipped Leeds to pick up their second Premier League win of the season when they travel to Norwich City on Sunday.

The Whites have claimed just one victory from their opening nine matches, but head to Norfolk to face a Norwich side who sit rock bottom on just two points.

Writing in his BBC prediction column, Lawrenson has backed Leeds to come away with a 2-0 success and believes that this could kickstart their season.

"This is game number 10 of the Premier League season, taking us more than a quarter of the way through, so if you are a manager or a coach you will now have a really good idea what you can expect from your team during the rest of the campaign," he said.

"Let’s face it, things do not look very good for Norwich right now after their capitulation against Chelsea last weekend, and it is hard to see them improving much in the coming months.

"Leeds have been slow off the mark themselves, and given their form, this should be a home game for Norwich to target to win. I don’t see that happening though."

Roberts rethink after slow start

Tyler Roberts has had a rough time of it at Leeds United, never quite a guaranteed starter, but still managing between 1,000 and 2,000 minutes per season.

The 22-year-old has been a utility player of sorts, deputising as one of Marcelo Bielsa's attacking central midfielders for the majority of the Argentine's tenure, leaving Patrick Bamford's centre-forward berth untouched.

Spanish international Rodrigo arrived in the summer of 2020, and while he too has struggled to oust Bamford, it has been the 30-year-old who was given the nod ahead of Roberts in the number nine role during Bamford's recent absence.

Now, with young Joe Gelhardt looking as though he will graduate from the under-23s with immediacy, there are threats to Roberts's position both from above and below his standing in the pecking order.

So, what does Marcelo Bielsa see in the 22-year-old? Joe Donnohue has taken a look.
