Leeds United news as Kalvin Phillips sees promise in Gareth Southgate comments

Here are this evening's latest Leeds United headlines on Tuesday, May 25.

Southgate discusses Phillips injury

Gareth Southgate has provided hope Kalvin Phillips will yet be fit for Euro 2020 with his inclusion in the England squad, but urged they will take a watching brief for now.

The national boss was asked about Jordan Henderson's situation, but in talking about the Liverpool captain, Southgate grouped Jack Grealish, Phillips and Harry Maguire in with the same assessment.

"We actually think with the level of work Jordan's been able to achieve is very high," he said. "What we haven't been able to see yet is him on the pitch in the match situation.

"He's firmly on track to be involved in those games and there would be no point in bringing him if that wasn't a possibility.

"So, in some regards, he may be ahead of others. He's had a long period out, but he's had a high training load without the matches.

"Jack Grealish has had a long period out, has played the matches, maybe hasn't had the intensity of the training.

"We've got to see how they respond to training with the group, what their recovery is like, what other issues that could throw up.

"So, although they're heading in a good direction, these are not an ideal situation and we've got four of those with Kalvin and, potentially, Harry Maguire as well.

"We're just going to have to monitor all those really closely."

Leeds United enter Premier League record books again after defying expectations

Leeds United’s 59-point haul is one the largest of any newly promoted side in top-flight history.

It’s been a remarkable first season back in the Premier League for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, who have delighted supporters with a thrilling brand of football on their return to the promised land.

18 wins and five draws have left United with 59 points, putting them ninth in the table with their 3-1 win over West Brom on the final day helping them to their highest finish since the 2001/02 season when they ended up in fifth.

It is the latest in a number of records Leeds have set after winning 10 away games for the first time since the 1973/74 season and striker Patrick Bamford netted 10 away goals to match Andy Johnson's feat back in 2004/05.

Gareth Southgate opens up on Patrick Bamford omission from England squad

Gareth Southgate has opened up on why Patrick Bamford did not make the England squad after the Leeds United striker failed to make the provisional 33-man group for Euro 2020.

Bamford's omission was a questionable one given his brilliant goalscoring form this season for Leeds, with only Harry Kane scoring more goals than him in the Premier League as an English player.

And Southgate addressed Bamford's absence while discussing the fellow omission of Southampton forward Danny Ings.

"I think we have probably looked at the squad in March, you know the basis of the squad is what we had together in March, there's obviously players who have come back into the squad, and we were very pleased with the forward players we selected," he said when quizzed on the absence of Ings, before subsequently mentioning Bamford.
