Leeds United news as Garth Crooks names Whites star in team of the week after Liverpool win

Here are the latest Leeds United evening headlines on Monday, 31 October 2022.

Summerville

Garth Crooks has named Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville in his BBC Sport team of the week after his display in the 2-1 win at Liverpool. On just his second ever Premier League start, Summerville steered home an 89th minute winner for the Whites at Anfield as the Reds were beaten on home soil for the first time in over 18 months.

The 21-year-old has now scored two goals in as many matches and is beginning to show the type of form that won him so many plaudits at youth level. On Summerville's inclusion, Crooks said: “Boy, did Leeds need these three points. No-one expected they would get them at Anfield but not only did they get them, they deserved them.

"Crysencio Summerville certainty had the sort of impact Liverpool never expected. The 21-year-old Leeds midfielder could not have had a better birthday present than scoring the winning goal.”

Running stats

If Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch demanded a performance to prove that the players were committed to the cause, then Saturday's 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield provided exactly that.

Leeds covered 121.4km at Anfield - the most distance ran by a team in a Premier League game this season, and also outran their opponents Liverpool by roughly 11km. Furthermore, no player has covered more ground in a Premier League match this season than Brenden Aaronson did against the Reds (13.2km).

Leeds' running stats and their propensity to work harder than their opponents was a key proponent of the Marcelo Bielsa era and it would appear that Marsch was able to call on this key trait in the game against Liverpool in a performance where the head coach hailed his side's 'commitment'.

Raphinha to Summerville

Former Leeds United winger Raphinha has reacted to Crysencio Summerville's post on social media, after the young Dutchman scored the winning goal against Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday.

Leeds' first victory against Liverpool in over 21 years ended the Reds' 29-match unbeaten home record in the Premier League and saw Leeds climb one-point clear of the relegation zone.

After scoring the winning goal on the eve of his 21st birthday, Summerville post a series of images from the game, with the caption: "Words can't describe my feeling right now. I pray everyday and thank god for moments like this."
