Leeds United news as former loan star Ben White confirmed in Euro 2020 squad

Here are the latest Leeds United headlines on Monday, June 7.

Ben White named in England's Euro 2020 squad

Former Leeds United loan star Ben White has been confirmed as Trent Alexander-Arnold's replacement in Gareth Southgate's Euro 2020 squad.

The Brighton centre-back made his first England start on Sunday evening, playing the full 90 minutes as the Three Lions completed their pre-tournament preparations with a 1-0 over Romania at the Riverside Stadium.

White's versatility has aided his cause, with the 23-year-old coming on in a defensive midfield role during Wednesday's friendly win over Austria, turning out in a position that Marcelo Bielsa first utilised him in during his brilliant 2019-20 loan spell at Elland Road.

White played every single minute of Leeds' Championship-winning campaign, with the club seeing their bids to sign him on a permanent deal last summer refused by the Seagulls.

The defender joins his former Leeds team-mate Kalvin Phillips in the squad. The Whites midfielder played the opening 45 minutes against Romania in what was his first match action since he dislocated his shoulder in Leeds' final-day win over West Bromwich Albion last month.

Meslier Olympic no-go

Leeds United have made a decision regarding Illan Meslier's future - and it concerns his role with the French national side.

This summer, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics are to be held, one year after they were initially scheduled.

Countries are permitted to take football teams to the Games, provided they are U-23 sides, with few older exceptions in their squads.

Given Meslier's recent elevation to prominence in the French goalkeeping conversation, it would have been likely that he would feature at the Olympics.

However, Leeds have prohibited the 21-year-old from appearing, on account of disrupting pre-season preparations.

Leeds fans light up low-octane England friendly

Leeds United fans stole the show in what proved to be another drab England encounter on Sunday afternoon.

One of the main Whites narratives around the Three Lions aside from Kalvin Phillips’s chances has been about striker Patrick Bamford.

The United forward has been omitted from the last two international squads by Gareth Southgate despite outscoring all English players apart from Harry Kane in the Premier League.

Ollie Watkins was a part of the provisional squad for Euro 2020 and although he will now not be going, Leeds fans at the Riverside Stadium were quick to remind Southgate about their leading scorer's claims at the Riverside Stadium.
