Leeds United news as ex-player blames recruitment for club's struggles

Here is a round-up of the latest Leeds United news for Thursday, May 12.

Ex-Player blames recruitment for club's struggles

With only two games of their season left, Leeds United are in real danger of relegation from the Premier League as they sit inside the bottom two, whilst 17th place Burnley have a game in hand. Many things have gone wrong on the field for the Whites this season and the team find themselves in terrible form once again. However, former goalkeeper, Nigel Martyn was keen to stress how big a problem recruitment had been, as the squad have not been improved enough since promotion to the Premier League.

Martyn was speaking on BBC West Yorkshire, as reported by Inside Futbol: "Raphinha has been the one really good signing. The others you would say are players that are good enough to be in the squad but do they make your team better? That is something probably I would agree with. They are probably of the same level, but they are not making us better than what we already were."

Martin Keown slams 'unbelievable' Dan James challenge and says Leeds 'look doomed'

The Whites lost 3-0 to Chelsea on Wednesday night and for the second consecutive game, they found themselves down to ten men in the first half as Dan James received a straight red card for a foul on Mateo Kovacic. Martin Keown branded the challenge 'unbelievable' and was pessimistic about the club's chances of survival in the final games after a pitiful showing against the Blues.

“Unbelievable. And this is a thing you want your players at boiling point but you don't want them to boil over.” Keown said. “It's something that he didn't really do at Manchester United. I don't know whether it comes with playing for Leeds, a part of that getting stuck in and getting around people, but at the moment it’s costing them.

“Of course they’ve had a catalogue of injuries, down to 10 men again, I mean everything that could go wrong in this game went wrong. You look at it and you look at the fixtures that’s coming up and it does feel like now it's starting to fall apart for Leeds.”

Leeds United have lost their shield and need to regain discipline as 49ers watch this climax closely

Following last night's match, Beren Cross has explored four discussion points. One thing that many will have noticed is that Paraag Marathe was present in the director's box. Beren explained:

"Paraag Marathe was in the directors’ box alongside Orta, Kinnear and Dallas on Wednesday night. The vice-chairman cannot be at every match because of his San Francisco residence and 49ers obligations for much of the year.

"This was the first time he had been seen at Elland Road for several months and as the face of the 49ers investment vehicle, his opinion counts hugely. Future strategy on how the NFL franchise does or does not invest further in United is driven by Marathe and his colleagues.

"Slipping out of the Premier League less than two years after the Championship trophy was lifted at Elland Road was evidently not a part of their five-year plan in this relationship. Whether Leeds survive or go down, Marathe and the 49ers must play an important role in learning lessons from an abject 21/22."
