Leeds United news as Elland Road anthem legend dies and Klopp waxes lyrical

Marching on Together legend dies

The Chorley songwriter behind Leeds United's anthem Marching on Together has died at the age of 85.

Barry Mason co-wrote the sporting anthem with Les Reed in 1972, which has also become the song of city rugby league club Leeds Rhinos.

Other hits penned by the Coppull native include Tom Jones's mega-hit Delilah and The Last Waltz by Engelbert Humperdinck.

Barry passed away on Friday (April 16) at the age of 85.

He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2020 Birthday Honours for services to music.

Taking to Twitter, a Leeds United spokesperson said: "LUFC are saddened to learn of the passing of Barry Mason, co-writer of the club's anthem Marching On Together.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends. #RIPBarry."

Klopp waxes lyrical about Leeds

Leeds United showed Jurgen Klopp what is possible in football with their exceptional passion, belief and work ethic at Manchester City.

The Liverpool boss spoke to the media on Saturday afternoon ahead of Monday night’s trip to Elland Road and he waxed lyrical about United’s win at the champions-elect.

Klopp was bewildered by how the Whites were able to achieve more with 10 men against City than many teams do with 11 players.

“Man City played against 10 players of Leeds, so that’s not exactly the way Leeds usually play,” he said.

“It was an early red card, early 1-0 for Leeds. Leeds played an exceptional game from a passion point of view.
