Leeds United news as Diego Llorente suffers further setback as Whites end 45-year hoodoo

Here are the Leeds United morning headlines on Wednesday 27th January.

Diego Llorente hobbles off in Newcastle win

Spanish defender Diego Llorente withdrew from his first Leeds United start of the season with what appeared to be another muscle injury just nine minutes into the 2-1 win over Newcastle United.

The 27-year-old had started the game strongly, reading play well and playing a handful of forward passes before the BT Sport cameras panned to the central defender sat on the floor off the ball.

Llorente seemed to hold his hamstring when assistance from the club physio arrived, and was swiftly replaced by Pascal Struijk just minutes into the clash at St James' Park.

Were Leeds fortunate against Newcastle?

He previously picked up an injury on international duty earlier in the season, before suffering another setback in the final stages of his debut against Chelsea which kept him out for another month.

It was hoped that a 45-minute stint in the U-23s last week was the turning point for his Leeds United career but it appears he will spend yet more time on the sidelines.

Leeds back to winning ways

Leeds United earned their eighth win of the season in their nineteenth league game, against Newcastle United.

It marked the first time a Leeds United side had completed the double over Newcastle United since the 1975/76 season, with thanks to goals from Raphinha and Jack Harrison.

A goal from Newcastle's Miguel Almiron levelled things up in the second half, but only for four minutes as Jack Harrison scored the game's winner with a nonchalantly-struck half-volley into the far corner of Karl Darlow's net.

The result keeps Leeds in 12th, within three points of Chelsea.

Ex-Aston Villa defender linked

French media outlet Canal Plus have reported Leeds United are close to signing Olympique Marseille left-back Jordan Amavi this January, despite conflicting messaging from within the club over their transfers stance this window.

Amavi's contract is set to expire this summer, and has played in England before with Aston Villa between 2015 and 2017.

It remains speculation for now, but Leeds have utilised their knowledge of the French market before so would not be a complete surprise.
