Leeds United news as David James makes Illan Meslier claim, Phillips and Bamford latest

Leeds United evening headlines on Thursday, September 30.

'A fantastic prospect'

Ex-Premier League and England goalkeeper David James was a guest on Sky Sports News this afternoon, with Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier the topic of discussion.

Following an interview Meslier gave to the channel, James called the Leeds number one a 'fantastic prospect' and commented on his excellent shot-stopping against West Ham last weekend. James particularly mentioned Meslier's mobility but focussed on the French goalkeeper's mentality as something which really stood out to him.

"When you talk about him being level-headed and calm. I think that’s very difficult to train. Last season he would come for crosses, not deal with it correctly but then come for the next one," James said.

James also mentioned that Leeds not having an expectation where they would win every week would be beneficial for Meslier as he would be under less pressure not to make mistakes.

He added: "The way that Leeds play, they don’t expect to win every week. The goalkeeper has time to develop and last season was a great learning experience for him. If he’d gone on loan we wouldn’t be hearing an interview from him where he says he wants to be the world’s best goalkeeper."

Phillips' agent gives update

Kalvin Phillips' agent Kevin Sharp has been quoted saying that he can 'only see a positive outcome' in regards Phillips signing a new contract at Leeds United.

He has said: "There is a willingness from all sides to make it happen."

This will come as a relief to Leeds fans with speculation growing in recent days.

Bamford misses out on England cap

Patrick Bamford has missed out on the latest England squad as the injury he picked up during the Newcastle game will see him out of action for a few more weeks.

The striker was included in a senior England squad for the first time last month and made his debut against Andorra but his injury has meant that Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has earned a recall in his place.

Gareth Southgate shared his thoughts on the two strikers here.
