Leeds United news as club make six-figure Elland Road investment and Klich discusses slip up

Here are the latest Leeds United headlines on Friday 22nd January.

Elland Road set for new pitch

Leeds United will be playing on a new pitch at the beginning of February when they host Carlo Ancelotti's Everton.

The club have moved swiftly to install a short-term fix in the form of a hybrid pitch which will be ready in time for the Toffees' visit.

Angus Kinnear revealed the decision was taken in light of the recent adverse weather, and would see the surface through until the end of the season, hopefully leaving the pitch in better condition until May.

Why are Leeds struggling going forward?

Kinnear intends to have the entire pitch re-laid in the close-season, which will be a lengthy and expensive process. This latest development poses only as a short-term solution to remedying the Elland Road turf problem, and will cost £300,000.

The new hybrid turf is also used at Tottenham Hotspur's state-of-the-art stadium, where Leeds lost 3-0 earlier this month.

Klich discusses early struggles

Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich has revealed his tricky start to life at Elland Road back in 2017/18.

The Polish international struggled to settle into the team under Thomas Christiansen, and a slip in possession versus Cardiff City did nothing to help matters.

“I slipped, we lost a goal and from this game I almost never played again. I came on against Birmingham away, but it wasn’t enough and I knew I could do better, so I decided to go on loan to Utrecht," Klich told the Leeds United official site.

Klich returned with a point to prove after a conversation with director Angus Kinnear, stating he was up to the challenge and willing to fight for his place.

“I said to Angus [Kinnear] that I want to come back, that I want to prove everyone wrong, that I could make it here and play good football, because I knew I can, I just didn’t have the chance to show on the pitch, and that was the problem.”

Pulgar set for Fiorentina stay

Leeds United-linked midfielder Erick Pulgar may well remain a Serie A player this window, with Fiorentina keen to hold onto the Chilean so long as they are unable to land Arsenal's Lucas Torreira.

Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport report that Torreira is Fiorentina's number one target, however the likelihood of them securing a move for him while he remains on loan at Atletico Madrid is slim.

Despite Pulgar's lack of involvement this season, Fiorentina do not deem him expendable just yet, however that does not rule out a potential summer switch for the Chilean international. Unless Fiorentina can sort a replacement, or better an upgrade, Erick Pulgar is likely to stay a Serie A man.

No formal approach has been launched by Leeds on the Pulgar front, but stylistically he is a player who would fit the Elland Road approach.
