Leeds United news as Aston Villa star reflects on 'tough game' against Whites

Here are the latest evening headlines on Sunday, July 17.

Ings: ‘Overall we deserved to win’

Aston Villa forward Danny Ings believes his side ‘deserved to win’ as they edged to a 1-0 victory over Leeds United on Sunday.

Ings scored the winning goal from the penalty spot after Leif Davis handled the ball inside the box.

“It was a tough game as you can imagine,” Ings told Villa TV. “The competitive side never goes away whether it’s in pre-season or during the season.

“I thought overall we deserved to win today. I probably should’ve had a couple of goals but to get the winning goal feels nice.”

Ex-West Ham youngster ‘set for Leeds’

England under-18 attacker Sonny Perkins has signed a contract and completed his medical to become a Leeds United player, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The 18-year-old rejected professional terms at West Ham United and is set to be announced as Leeds’ seventh summer signing, claims Romano.

Gray injury update

Leeds United head coach Jesse Marsch is hopeful that Archie Gray’s ankle injury may be a sprain rather than a break. The 16-year-old was stretchered off during Sunday’s 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa following John McGinn’s challenge midway through the second half in Brisbane.

The challenge left the youngster in a heap on the floor before he was carried off with his right leg in a brace. Marsch says the severity will only be known in the next few days, but there is initial hope it may be a sprain rather than a break.

Marsch hails Meslier’s ‘massive potential’

Jesse Marsch has praised Illan Meslier’s ‘massive potential’ after the Leeds United goalkeeper produced a string of impressive saves against Aston Villa. The Whites lost 1-0 in the second game of their pre-season tour of Australia courtesy of Danny Ings' penalty in a match which was overshadowed by Archie Gray being stretchered off in tears.

Ings slotted home the eventual winner from the spot after Leif Davis handled inside the penalty area. But Meslier also palmed out Philippe Coutinho’s first half penalty and then reacted superbly to block the rebound. He produced another stunning save just moments later to tip Ollie Watkins’ effort over the crossbar.
