Leeds United news as Arsenal duo face bans ahead of Whites test and judgement day arrives

Here are the Leeds United morning headlines on Wednesday 3rd February.

Leno and Luiz facing bans

Arsenal pair Bernd Leno and David Luiz were shown straight red cards in the Gunners' clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers last night, just one game before playing Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium.

Ordinarily, this could mean a three-match ban for the key defensive duo however due to the change in rules regarding punishments following red cards, neither will miss Leeds' visit.

This is because three-match bans are now upheld only for violent conduct or seriously endangering an opponent. Leno and Luiz were sent for an early bath because they both denied clear goalscoring opportunities.

Total costs of Premier League squads

Instead of missing Leeds' jaunt to north London, the pair will be left out of Arsenal's trip to Aston Villa this weekend.

Judgement day arrives

Leeds United's home fixture with Everton sees the trialling of a brand new top surface at Elland Road.

£300,000 was invested in relaying the pitch last month, following the Whites' game with Brighton in which the surface appeared in troubling shape.

After heavy snowfall in West Yorkshire in the 36 hours leading up to kick-off this evening, it will be intriguing to see how the Elland Road pitch handles the cut-and-thrust of a Premier League fixture.

The club have had little opportunity to rectify the pitch's drainage issues given last summer's unusually short pre-season.

It is hoped that full-scale work can be conducted at the end of this campaign.

Poveda scepticism

Leeds United fans have had their say on an injury update posted by young winger Ian Poveda on the player's personal Instagram account.

Poveda limped off in the U23s' 2-0 win over Sunderland earlier in the week, appearing to roll his ankle when chasing back to retrieve possession.

The youngster posted a picture on his Instagram story yesterday confirming that the assessment of his knock had returned a verdict of not serious.

However, there is scepticism, mainly because what appears to be Poveda's crutches are in shot. These may well have been used as a precaution before being assessed, but it does have Leeds fans concerned with Raphinha also sidelined through injury.
