Leeds United news as Alan Shearer outlines what Patrick Bamford must do to earn England call-up

Here are this morning's latest Leeds United headlines on Saturday, February 6.

What Shearer wants to see from Bamford

The subject of a potential England call-up for Patrick Bamford has re-emerged as a talking point following the Leeds United striker's excellent display against Leicester City last month.

While Marcelo Bielsa refuses to speculate on the matter, insisting that he does not want to interfere with Gareth Southgate's work, it hasn't stopped plenty of people pushing Bamford's case in the media.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Micah Richards says he has spoken to former Three Lions skipper Alan Shearer about Bamford.

Marcelo Bielsa on Leeds United's second half improvement

"People said he would struggle at the start of the season, that he misses too many chances," said the former Manchester City man. "I spoke to Alan Shearer about him recently. Alan said he does need to become a bit more clinical but he really rates Bamford, as he offers something different.

"Alan's view backed up what I have been thinking for some time. Bamford has been brilliant for Leeds and 11 goals is excellent return at this stage of the season. I would have him in the England squad, 100 per cent. If he keeps progressing, Gareth Southgate may have him in there, too"

England's next fixtures are a triple-header against San Marino, Albania and Poland at the end of next month.

Raphinha's new challenge

The 4-1 pasting Crystal Palace gave Leeds United in November remains one of the most chastening evenings the Whites have had since promotion.

Thrashings were going to be expected on the odd occasion from a high-rolling top-six side, but not from negative, defensive, cautious, attritional, organised Crystal Palace.

Once Patrick Bamford’s fair goal was ruled out by VAR it never seemed like it was going to be United’s afternoon.

The match at Selhurst Park was the first occasion this term Bielsa has started with his 3-3-1-3 system to counter their two strikers.

It didn’t work and felt fragile throughout the game. Helder Costa, hooked at the break, did not cope well with Patrick van Aanholt and he hasn’t started in the league since.

As Beren Cross points out here, Raphinha now faces the audition that Costa failed on Monday night.
