Leeds United morning headlines: Whites fans raise £26,000 for food banks, West Brom's pay stance

Here are the Leeds United morning headlines for Monday, April 6.

Leeds fans raise over £26,000 for food banks

Three Leeds United fans have raised over £26,000 for food banks after playing video game Football Manager for 24 consecutive hours.

Dan Moylan, Daniel Chapman and Michael Normanton from The Square Ball, the Leeds United fanzine and podcast, played the game from 10am on Saturday morning until 10am on Sunday morning.

They broadcast the event on the internet which saw a number of guests invited onto the stream during the event, including Leeds fan and comedian Jon Richardson.

The money raised has been donated to Leeds Fans Foodbank, who support the two food banks in Leeds.

West Brom’s pay cut stance

West Bromwich Albion are not currently planning to place any of their non-playing staff on furlough.

The Baggies released a statement yesterday saying that despite struggling like a number of football clubs with minimal income coming into the club, they do intend to keep non-playing staff on full pay.

Last week, Leeds United’s players and senior staff agreed to take a wage deferral to help the running of the club.

O’Leary’s touching tribute

Former United boss David O’Leary paid an emotional tribute to Leeds fans 20 years on from the Istanbul tragedy in which two fans lost their lives.

In 2000, Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight were both killed on the eve of the Whites’ UEFA Cup tie with Galatasaray in Istanbul.

O’Leary posted a video on Twitter yesterday where he paid tribute to Loftus and Speight, as well as their families and the Whites’ supporters.

Here is what O’Leary had to say in the video

Bielsa is “football crazy”

Former Barcelona forward Javier Saviola has described Marcelo Bielsa as being “football crazy.”

Saviola played under Bielsa during his time as Argentina’s manager in which the duo won Olympic gold together in 2004.

In an interview about his former boss, Saviola explained why Bielsa’s passion for football and his knowledge of the game makes him incredible to learn off.

Patrick Bamford can also take confidence in what Saviola had to say
