Leeds United morning headlines: Warning that Whites could play behind closed doors for 18 months

All the latest headlines for this Thursday morning.

Market value of players plummets

Since football came to a standstill, the market value of the Leeds squad has dropped from £93.38m to £75.69m, a decrease of 18.9 per cent.

Nevertheless, the Whites still possess the joint-second highest valued player in the division in Kalvin Phillips (£10.8m).

Almost all of Bielsa's squad has seen a drop in value, but there is one player whose stock has risen.

Whites offered indication of Championship return

Several Premier League clubs are expressing a desire for the 2019/20 season to come to an end by June 30, rather than delaying the finish indefinitely.

However, while the Premier League and FA are keen to conclude the campaign by extending the season into the summer months, several Premier League clubs are uniting with a different stance.

The Mirror reports that at least nine clubs have had serious discussions amongst themselves and will come together to present their case to the Premier League on Friday, as they call for the season to be curtailed - rather than risk the “huge uncertainty and utter chaos” of allowing it to drag on for months beyond the summer.

Behind closed doors could become the norm

Although there is still hope that Leeds United can indeed finish the season, there remains doubt over when fans will be able to attend matches again.

Dr Zach Binney, an epidemiologist at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, doesn’t think the normality of match-day crowds congregating at stadiums for sporting events can return until a vaccine for the virus is discovered - and that could take time.

“The thing that people need to understand, epidemiologically speaking, is that every person you add to a gathering adds risk,” he told the Times.

“Even if you have really low community-based transmission, it only takes a few people in that crowd of 60,000 for there to be a risk of something very significant happening.

“As a scientist, I hate to say I am ever 100 per cent sure about anything but I am as close to 100 per cent as I’ve ever been that we cannot return to filled-to-capacity stadia until we have a vaccine. Period.

“The best guess is about 18 months, could be a little more, could be a little less.”

Who will be Bielsa's next debutant?

Leeds United’s Thorp Arch academy is the jewel in the club’s crown, a production line for high-class professional footballers.

Just this week a new report was published which confirmed no club in England had produced more footballers currently plying their trade in Europe’s top-five divisions.

Who may be the next out of the factory door then?

Supporters have long been interested in the next generation, just look at the numbers who follow the under-23s around the country.
