Leeds United morning headlines: The 'risky' player who could smash transfer record, Whites' rival fires warning

All the headlines for this Wednesday morning.

Who's your player of the season so far?

One of the many races still to be run if Leeds United’s season does indeed start up again is that for the club’s Player of the Year prize.

The award has been held by Pablo Hernandez for the past two years, but it looks unlikely the Spaniard will claim the gong this term after an up and down campaign.

We ran the rule of half-a-dozen contenders for the gong.

Ben White

He was a comfortable winner of this prize at the halfway mark, but the season has, inevitably, caught up with him a touch in 2020.

Mesmerisingly calm in any situation this campaign has thrown at him. There are too many tackles, passes and turns to mention.

Nobody had heard of the Brighton & Hove Albion loanee at this level before the season started and the perennial call for more centre-backs continued into Ashton Gate.

White was the best player on the pitch in Bristol and did not put a foot wrong until Phillips’s suspension forced him into midfield at Huddersfield Town.

The gloss has dimmed since that trip down the road, but, again, you could call him a victim of his own 2019 success.

What the squad could look like in pre-season

It could be some months before the 2019-20 season is finally brought to a close.

For Leeds United, the stoppage hit them hard as it put the buffers on their bid for automatic promotion and a quest to reach the Premier League.

Should the Whites get the chance to finish the job they started then their squad could look very different to how it does presently.

We have worked out how the squad could look after contracts expire and loan spells end.

We think it could leave Marcelo Bielsa with a 25-man squad.

Forest man fires Whites a warning

Nottingham Forest full-back Matty Cash has warned Leeds United that they have not given up the fight for automatic promotion.

Sabri Lamouchi's side trail second-placed West Brom by 10 points, and Leeds by 11.

"If you win five in a row and Leeds and West Brom lose a couple then you are right in the frame again," he told Sky Sports.

"Play-offs would be a great achievement from where we've been before.

"We have been nowhere near in the four or five years I have been here. But if we keep winning games you never know."

Record signing represents 'risk'

Jean-Kevin Augustin would represent a 'risk' if Leeds were to sign him permanently.

That's the view of former Whites star Noel Whelan.

According to German newspaper Bild, Leeds would be forced to shell out as much as £17m on Augustin if they are promoted this season.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said: “To put the money on the table is a risk.

“If he is going to be the record signing he needs to make a difference straight away. At the minute he has not made any difference and he has not been a part of this promotion push.

“He has had 55 minutes maximum and even with that he was fighting himself – his fitness and form.

"To be honest he was trying too hard. If we can get him into a good frame of mind and the fitness levels we expect we could have a real gem on our hands.”
