Leeds United morning headlines: Pursuit of defender given boost, Norman Hunter tributes continue to pour in

Here are your headlines on this Monday morning.

Matchday revenue could take a big hit

Leeds United could play just 11 home games next season under bold plans to split the EFL into regional divisions.

The Sun on Sunday reported that EFL chiefs are considering plans to split up all three divisions by region.

The leagues would run on a north-south basis and the proposal is just one suggestion for when football eventually resumes after the coronavirus fallout.

The move would divvy leagues into 12-team divisions and would cut travel time and reduce costs.

One potential drawback is of course that teams would see the number of home games played effectively halved, from 23 at present down to just 11 - this would obviously result in lost matchday revenue for clubs like Leeds who regularly sell out Elland Road.

White fee may be reduced

It is the transfer saga which looks like dominating the summer headlines for Leeds United.

Ben White has enjoyed a stellar season so far during his loan spell with the Whites.

The 22-year-old has been an ever-present as Leeds have marched to the top of the Championship.

With just nine games of the regular season remaining, they are within touching distance of a long-awaited return to the Premier League.

The coronavirus outbreak has of course led to all games being suspended indefinitely.

And according to Kieran Maguire, a football finance lecturer at the University of Liverpool, the pandemic is likely to have a knock-on effect in this summer's transfer market.

Grayson reminisces over Old Trafford win

Former Leeds United boss Simon Grayson has revealed the words of wisdom he passed onto his players in the week building up their famous FA Cup victory over Manchester United.

The Whites, then in League One, beat the reigning Premier League champions 1-0 at Old Trafford in 2010 thanks to a goal from Jermaine Beckford.

It's an FA Cup shock that has gone down in the history of the competition and remains one of Leeds' greatest scalps today, capping off a memorable season that saw them promoted back to the Championship.

In what was a phenomenal triumph, Grayson has explained how he prepped his players mentally for their biggest test of the season and what he said to them in the build-up to the clash.

Hunter 'never wasted the ball'

Tributes continue to pour in for Leeds United legend Norman Hunter, who sadly died on Friday.

Retired England and Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy, now a respected pundit, was among those to go the extra yard with their Hunter tribute.

“He never wants to waste the ball,” said Murphy. “He could play the percentages here, especially in the final and hoof it forward but he doesn't.

“He is calm and authoritative. Not many centre-backs possess that level of comfort on the ball."
