Leeds United morning headlines as youngster tipped for first-team involvement and Robin van Persie endorses striker

Here are the Leeds United morning headlines on Wednesday 9th December.

Charlie Cresswell set for prominent role

Teenage defender Charlie Cresswell could be set to feature more regularly in Leeds United's first-team squad following the injury sustained by Robin Koch.

Cresswell led the defence at home to Hull City in the EFL Cup earlier this season and has impressed with his solidity and physicality in the U23s side.

The son of former United forward Richard Cresswell recently signed a contract extension and could be rewarded further with greater first-team responsibilities, particularly if Marcelo Bielsa deems Diego Llorente not yet ready for weekly action.

Bielsa is much more likely to work with the players at his disposal - including 18-year-old Cresswell - as opposed to delving into the January window.

Kalvin Phillips on 'funny' Llorente taunt

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has described Chelsea fans' jeers towards Diego Llorente at Stamford Bridge as 'funny', following the Spaniard's theatrical yelp at being fouled on his debut.

The 2,000 spectators mocked the defender whenever he took possession of the ball at the Bridge which annoyed some Leeds fans, but Phillips saw the lighter side.

“To be honest they were quite funny. They were quite humorous.

"Diego had gone down for a little foul and they took that the wrong way. Every time he got the ball there was screaming, and they were saying stuff to him, which was funny,” he told BBC Radio Leeds.

Despite the result, Phillips stated he was pleased to see fans in stadiums, particularly after nine months away.

Leeds linked with Dutch forward

Former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has tipped Utrecht attacker Gyrano Kerk for a Premier League switch, amid reports that Leeds United are among the interested parties.

Leeds fans will be cautious over the signing of a Dutch forward following the failed move of Jay-Roy Grot, but Van Persie's endorsement certainly speaks volumes of the player.

“Kerk is a player who basically has everything. He is fast, has vision, is technical and can score.

"He can still play a level higher in the near future,” Van Persie told De Telegraaf, alluding to a potential Premier League move.

It is claimed Celtic are also in the running for Kerk, who could arrive at Celtic Park to replace Odsonne Edouard who is expected to depart.
