Leeds United morning headlines as Whites eye Premier League midfielder, Said Benrahma latest

Here are your Leeds United morning headlines for Tuesday, August 4.

Leeds eye McCarthy swoop - report

Leeds are weighing up a move for Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy, according to 90min.

The Irishman only moved to Selhurst Park last summer and made 35 appearances for Roy Hodgson’s side in 2019/20.

But McCarthy is already being linked with a move away from the south London side, and Leeds are among those said to be interested.

Marcelo Bielsa is looking to bolster his midfield options ahead of next term, and McCarthy would add significant Premier League experience to the squad.

Newcastle United, West Ham United and Aston Villa are also reportedly tracking the 29-year-old, who cost Palace around £3million last summer.

Whites face Benrahma battle

Leeds have again been linked with a move for Brentford forward Said Benrahma ahead of tonight’s play-off final.

The Algeria international has been one of the standout performers in the Championship this season, scoring 17 goals and providing nine assists.

And if the Bees fail to win promotion by beating Fulham at Wembley, Leeds could pounce.

According to The Athletic, the Whites are firmly in the the race to sign the 24-year-old, who could move on even if Brentford go up.

Aston Villa, managed by former Brentford boss Dean Smith, are also thought to be keeping tabs on Benrahma.

Brentford set for windfall

If Brentford beat Fulham on Wednesday, they will earn even more money for promotion to the Premier League than the Cottagers would.

Leeds were crowned champions of the second tier last month, edging out West Bromwich Albion and Brentford to finish top.

The Bees now face Fulham in the play-off final at Wembley, and it’s they who stand to gain the most financially from victory.

According to analysis from Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, Fulham would receive an estimated £135m from promotion over the next three seasons, while Brentford’s coffers would be boosted to the tune of £160m because they haven’t been in the Premier League before.

Fulham are currently receiving parachute payments following their relegation in 2018/19, which is why they stand to earn less than Brentford.
