Leeds United morning headlines as West Brom boss fires warning shot and Haaland error discussed

Good morning, Leeds fans. Here are your morning headlines for Monday, June 15.

Southgate on the Leeds-born star who got away

Erling Haaland has taken European football by storm this season. And given the striker was born in Leeds during father Alf-Inge’s time at the club, he was eligible to play for England.

With two caps for Norway that ship has since sadly sailed, but Three Lions’ boss Gareth Southgate has been speaking about missing out on Haaland.

"Obviously at the younger age groups at that time, that wouldn't have been on my radar, because when he broke into first-team football he was pretty much already in the Norwegian youth system," he said.

"We recruit early but we wouldn't have been into him when he was still in Yorkshire, that's for sure.”

Bilic fires warning ahead of Championship restart

Championship football resumes on Saturday, although Leeds have to wait until the following day to restart their bid to earn promotion to the Premier League when they travel to Cardiff City.

The Whites’ main rivals at the top of the division are West Bromwich Albion and their manager Slaven Bilic has been speaking to the Daily Mail about the prospect of completing the campaign behind closed doors.

"There is big pressure on us and playing in empty stadiums shouldn't change our attitude," he said.

"Our goal is not to have somebody clap us. The goal is going to the Premier League. That kind of achievement requires that you cope with pressure."

Richards on racist abuse he suffered in Leeds

Former England international Micah Richards was born in Birmingham and made his name with Manchester City, but people may not realise he grew up in Chapeltown.

And the retired defender has been speaking to the Mirror about the racist abuse he suffered while playing football as a child in Leeds.

“When I played for Leeds City Boys I was the only black player on the team and I was racially abused every week,” he said.

“I’ve had coaches say to me, ‘You’re a good lad aren’t you, Micah?’ It sounds inoffensive, but I knew what road they were going down. It was like they were surprised that this black kid could be a decent lad."

Richards also explained how he has been deeply scarred by racism and that it has affected his own behaviour.
