Leeds United morning headlines as Rodrigo De Paul transfer boost emerges, Berardi's return hints

Here are your Leeds United morning headlines on Saturday, 12 September.

Berardi hint at Leeds return

Leeds fans favourite Gaetano Berardi has dropped a big hint he may return to the club despite his contract at Elland Road expiring this summer.

The Swiss defender suffered an ACL injury in the win over Derby County at the end of last season before his contract expired, but now he has hinted he may yet make a return to Leeds.

RSI quote the 32-year-old as saying, via Leeds Live: "I go walking a lot but it’s going well, even if it will be a long recovery. At the end of September I should go back to England to define everything and still stay at Leeds.

“We deserved the promotion and we hope to stay up in the Premier League too. I think the team is well equipped and we will have the opportunity to show our qualities.”

Leeds boost in De Paul pursuit

Udinese midfielder Rodrigo De Paul - a transfer target for Leeds - has rejected a move to Zenit Saint Petersburg, according to Tuttomercatoweb via Leeds Live.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to Elland Road this summer and is said to be in high-demand, with Udinese likely to sell him for upwards of £25million should an adequate offer come in.

The Argentine international has been at the Serie A club for the past four years but Leeds fans will be hoping he is open to a move to Yorkshire.

Phillips tips Leeds star to shine

Former Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion striker Kevin Phillips believes his namesake Kalvin Phillips will “shine” in the Premier League this season.

The central-midfielder was capped by England earlier this week and looks set to be a key figure for Marcelo Bielsa’s side this campaign.

“Kalvin Phillips has made his international debut before he’s made his Premier League debut which doesn’t happen very often,” Phillips told Football Insider.

“I’ll be intrigued now to see how he handles the week in, week out playing against top class players.

“I expect him to shine, to be honest, I think he’s a top player.

“In terms of anyone else, I think it’s going to be really difficult. I hope we’re talking in three or four months saying that there’s one or two of these players that have really shone.”
