Leeds United morning headlines as Patrick Bamford blasts VAR decision, Marcelo Bielsa reaction

Here are your Leeds United morning headlines for Sunday, November 8.

Bamford baffled by disallowed goal

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford has revealed that referee Chris Kavanagh did not know why his equalising goal against Crystal Palace on Saturday was not allowed to stand.

Bamford had appeared to cancel out Scott Dann’s opener for Palace only for VAR to adjudge him to be offside because of the position of his arm.

"To be honest, I thought it was just a formality checking it," Bamford told BT Sport, as per LeedsLive.

"I thought it would be fine. I've just seen it back there and I've been playing for seven years now and I don't understand the rule now.

"You can't score with your arm or your hand so if your hand is offside, how is that offside? They have to make it clearer.

"The referee when I asked him didn't really know. I'm not just saying it because it's my goal but I've seen many of the TV with it previously and it's ruining the game I think."

Bielsa on disallowed goal

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa refused to be drawn into commenting on the decision to disallow Bamford’s strike at Selhurst Park.

The striker found the net early on against Palace to level the score but his effort was ruled out by a controversial offside decision.

Bielsa did not speak directly on the decision but did hint that the rules were not fit for purpose.

“Whatever the referee whistles, he whistles and I never comment on his decisions,” Bielsa told his post-match press conference, as per LeedsLive.

“And if the rules need to be changed, there are a lot of people dedicated to this.”

Pundit fury on goal decision

BBC Sport pundit and former Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford was left baffled by the decision to chalk off Patrick Bamford’s equalising goal against Palace.

Beckford was analysing the game at Selhurst Park and believes the decision was not one that benefitted the game, as it disallowed an equaliser for the visitors.

Beckford told BBC’s Final Score programme during live match coverage as per hitc.com: “Come off it, honestly, the only part of his body that’s offside is his arm. And his arm is fully stretched to say where to put the ball. You cannot score with that part of your body.

“How is that offside? That is absolute nonsense. That’s ridiculous – It shouldn’t have been the case [when Eze made it 2-0]. It shouldn’t have been allowed to happen that way, especially with the goal being ruled out.

“Bang out of order! Terrible. Not offside. Not offside! You cannot score with that part of your arm.

"If you try to score with that part of your arm that they claim is offside then it’s a free-kick. A handball. How it’s not allowed to stand I have no idea!”
