Leeds United morning headlines as Liverpool striker sent transfer message and Rodrigo hint dropped

Here are the Leeds United morning headlines for Thursday, August 27.

Whelan backs Liverpool targets

Noel Whelan has said he’s excited by the prospect of Leeds signing Divock Origi from Liverpool this summer.

The Whites look set to complete the purchase of Rodrigo Moreno from Valencia in the coming days, but Marcelo Bielsa is still keen to strengthen his forward line.

And Whelan believes Origi, whose team-mate Rhian Brewster has also been linked with a loan move to Elland Road, would be an excellent addition.

“They’re both very good players in their own right,” Whelan said of Origi and Brewster in an interview with Football Insider.

“You’ve got one up and coming player who has been out on loan and done very well with the spell he had.

“But you’ve got to look at it now, you’re in the Premier League, and as much as Rhian Brewster did very well at Swansea, that’s Championship football.

“For me, I would like to see a more established, a more experienced player, somebody who knows the Premier League and that is Divock Origi.”

Rodrigo a done deal?

The Premier League have dropped a major hint that suggests Leeds have completed the signing of Rodrigo.

Leeds are closing in on the acquisition of the Valencia forward for a club-record fee as they continue to prepare for the new Premier League season.

No announcement has been made yet but there are signs that Leeds may have already wrapped up the transfer.

Eagle-eyed supporters spotted that Rodrigo is listed as a Leeds player on the official Fantasy Premier League site.

Players of the game are able to add the 29-year-old to their squads for the 2020/21 campaign, suggesting the deal may already be complete.

Leeds face Matviyenko fight

Leeds will attempt to win a hotly-contested race for the signature of Mykola Matviyenko, according to reports.

Bielsa’s side are competing with three other Premier League clubs for the services of the Ukraine international, according to 90min.

West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton are also interested in the Shakhtar Donetsk defender.

Matviyenko, who is said to be available for around £20million, can play at left-back or centre-back.
