Leeds United morning headlines as 'high risk' plan denied and Cooper makes captaincy revelation

Here are the Leeds United morning headlines on Friday, June 5.

Cooper says being Leeds captain is an 'honour'

Leeds United defender Liam Cooper believes that he has grown into the role of captain.

Speaking to LUTV alongside former Leeds captain Lucas Radebe, Cooper responded positively when asked if he considered himself an inspirational leader.

“I hope people believe that. A big one for me is trying to set an example and embracing the role," he said.

“I certainly think I have come into my own in the last couple of years and for Marcelo (Bielsa) to give me the armband was a real honour and one I’ve taken with pride.”

Cooper, who has started 28 Championship games in central defence for table-topping Leeds, also opened up on the nuances of the role.

"I’m always there if the lads have any issues and I want to be that vocal point for the team," he added.

"Usually I try and do that by getting the lads up for the game before it and speaking to the lads with pointers to try and help them out and it does go a long way."

Leeds 'stunned' by a potential 160-mile trip to a neutral venue

Leeds have reportedly been left stunned by plans to move their fixture with Derby County to Southampton’s St. Mary’s stadium - some 160 miles away from Elland Road, according to The Telegraph.

The report says that Mark Roberts, the national lead officer in UKFPU, has requested the fixture be moved to a neutral venue after deeming the fixture 'high risk'.

However, Roberts has strongly denied the allegation.

“The suggestions put to us are categorically untrue,” he said. “I am still seeking views from forces about any games they may wish to seek a neutral venue for, and at this time have no definitive list of proposals.”

The Championship has been given the green light to get underway on June 20.

One Leeds individual tests positive for coronavirus - report

Leeds are among the six Championship clubs to have had a positive coronavirus test in the latest round of EFL testing, according to the Daily Mail.

A total of nine positives emerged across six clubs from the 1,094 tests carried out this week, with Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield Town and Preston North End the only three to confirm their cases.

It is Leeds’ policy to not comment on players or staff testing.

Any player who returns a positive test must now self-isolate for seven days and is not permitted to go back to training until they return a negative test.
