Leeds United morning headlines as Harry Wilson tipped for transfer and Cardiff get injury boost

Here are the Leeds United morning headlines for Tuesday, June 2.

Whelan tips Leeds to land Wilson

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has backed the club to sign Liverpool midfielder Harry Wilson this summer.

Wales international Wilson, 23, has not managed to break through into Jurgen Klopp’s first team at Anfield despite impressive loan spells at Hull City, Derby County and Bournemouth in the last three seasons.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said Wilson would make a ‘good addition’ to Marcelo Bielsa’s side, having chosen Bournemouth over Leeds last year.

“He is a player that is admired by Marcelo Bielsa and a player that fits the bill when you look at style of play – an attacking midfielder that has technical ability on the ball,” he said.

“He has a little taste of Premier League football so if he is available I think Leeds will be interested.

“He seems like a very, very exciting player and a good addition. Coming from Liverpool, he has great pedigree and he has proven his worth at Derby. There is a player there.”

Cardiff’s double injury boost ahead of Leeds clash

Cardiff City are expected to welcome back two key players in time for their possible clash with Leeds later this month.

The two clubs are set to meet each other during the weekend of June 20 after the EFL confirmed the Championship is set to restart on that date.

And, according to Wales Online, the Bluebirds may have returning duo Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Lee Tomlin in their line-up.

“We are certainly hoping Tomlin and Mendez-Laing will both be available for the next game of the season, when that comes about,” said boss Neil Harris.

“Whether it's that they are ready to start a game or not, but we are hopeful they can have some impact from the bench.

"We are not putting too much pressure on them, but it is a positive, they are two very popular players and it's great to have them back, they are vital to success for us.”

Woodgate welcomes Championship restart

Middlesbrough boss Jonathan Woodgate has backed the EFL’s decision to resume the Championship season later this month.

Former Whites defender Woodgate faces a challenge to keep Boro in the division, with the Teessiders just two points above the relegation zone.

However, Woodgate said he is looking towards the future after almost three months without competitive action.

“That’s the news we've been waiting for. As a club we’ve made no secret of the fact that we wanted to restart the season when it is deemed safe enough to do so," he told Boro’s website.

“We’ve followed the guidance of the authorities all along, and will continue to do so. It isn’t a lot of time, but the players worked to their own programmes during lockdown, and came back here last week.

“We’d had June 20 in mind as a possible return and were already working towards that date. We had a good week last week and we’ll step things up this week, and keep moving forwards now.”
