Leeds United morning headlines as England legend suggests major promotion blow

Here are your Leeds United morning headlines for Wednesday, April 29.

Waddle calls for ‘null and void’ season

Former England winger Chris Waddle has called for the football season in England to be declared null and void and to ‘start again in August’ - meaning no promotions or relegations would be declared.

It comes after the French government declared the 2019/20 season for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 would not be completed, with a decision on title winners, promotion, relegation and European places to be made next month.

That follows on from reports that the Eredivisie in the Netherlands would be ended with no promotion or relegation, while in Belgium the league has also been concluded.

Eyes are starting to turn to a decision being made in England with Leeds at the heart of that as they are on course to secure their long-awaited return to the top flight.

“Personally, I think they should pull the plug on all the leagues and start again in August,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live on Tuesday night.

“I just think it is an unbelievable season and no one saw this coming and me personally I think all the leagues should do like Holland and say 'we are stopping it'.”

Waddle said that while teams would feel frustrated at missing out on titles or promotion, there was no ideal solution.

“But then you say who is going to get relegated? Who is going to get the Champions League places? There is too much at stake and there are too many arguments which will start,” he added.

“Unfortunately you have got to put it down to circumstances and say this is a one off, hopefully, and it never happened.”

No football until after summer - FIFA medical chief

FIFA’s medical chief Michel D'Hooghe believes football should not return until ‘the end of August or the beginning of September’.

The French government declared that no sport should be played before August, as the Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 seasons were ended, following similar decisions in both Belgium and the Netherlands.

Germany’s Bundesliga, Italy’s Serie A, Spain’s La Liga and the Premier League are all pushing ahead with proposed plans to resume the 2019/20 when it is safe to do so.

“We are all subject to decisions at national level from the public authorities. It is very simple. Football suddenly becomes not the most important thing in life,” D'Hooghe told The Telegraph.

“I will be happy if we can start, in a convenient way, the next championship and have nothing before the start of next season.

“If they could start the 2020/21 season at the end of August or beginning of September I would be happy. Then they could eventually avoid a second attack from the virus, which is not impossible.

“Everyone has to be very careful for the moment.”

Leeds Twitter 'hit list'

Leeds United social media manager Craig Wilson has opened up on the role and explained how he has a list of those who have recently demeaned the club in order to hit back, with good humour, over the account.

The account has established itself as a source of entertainment with sarcasm, wit and banter central to the approach.

"I actually do have [a list]," Wilson explained to The Press Conference Podcast . "Halfway through the season, we have a list of people who have said something against us and the next time we play them, we're like: 'All right, you've said this against us'.

"Basically, it is part of the content planning so we try to be as organised as possible. We have our 'On This Day' stuff that goes out and when a match is coming up, we go: 'Alright, which former players are playing for the opposition.'

"We then just look to see if they have ever said anything against us and is there anything that can spice up the game a little bit?

"It is just all part of the journey on a match-day. It is nice, basically, that you have got fans itching for full-time and hopefully we have won, and the fans are like: 'Get them, get them, get them!'

"It is nice to have those two-way conversations and make them [the fans] feel as though they are part of it."
