Leeds United morning digest as Erling Haaland's roots tipped to play role in striker's future

Here is the Leeds United morning digest on Friday 9th April 2021.

Haaland's future set to be swayed by Alf-Inge's career

Former Leeds United defender Gunnar Halle predicts Erling Haaland will consider a move to England this summer if he is to leave Borussia Dortmund.

Haaland featured as Manchester City defeated the Bundesliga side in the first leg of the two teams' Champions League quarter-final earlier this month.

It was his first appearance at the Etihad Stadium, a destination many have tipped to be his home ground next season.

"I think a little bit of his heart will be in England because his dad was playing there with Leeds and City but also his connection with Ole Gunnar so I think his Dad will maybe play a part," Halle told the Daily Star.

Pre-match tactics corner

Manchester City's innovative tactical tweaks have delivered eight wins out of nine in the Champions League this season and 18 wins from their last 19 Premier League games.

LeedsLive's Joe Donnohue has assessed where Manchester City have improved since the 1-1 draw at Elland Road earlier this season.

Joao Cancelo appears to be a key figure in Pep Guardiola's new-look system, revolutionising modern-day formations with an avant-garde 3-2-5 or 3-1-3-3 on-the-ball approach.

It is an approach which bears similarities to Bielsa's own 3-3-1-3 setup which has been tried on occasion at Leeds.

McLeish preaches Phillips talks

Former Premier League and international manager Alex McLeish has urged Leeds United to tie Kalvin Phillips down to a bumper long-term contract.

Phillips has predictably been a key figure at Leeds this season, with the team losing six of the eight matches without him.

He has continued his brief as an integral player from last season when Leeds United were promoted from the Championship.

“You have to look after the home-bred guys. Kalvin Phillips would command a monster fee.

“Homegrown guys tend to be much more expensive. When you’re maybe casting your eyes abroad and you’re looking, you could possibly get a wee bargain here and there.

“But when you get home-grown guys like Phillips, tying him down is of the utmost importance," McLeish told Football Insider.
