Leeds United monitoring EFL trio in attempt to repeat Joe Gelhardt swoop

Leeds United are reportedly set to once again turn their attentions to the EFL's brightest prospects.

The Whites landed Joe Gelhardt from Wigan Athletic in the summer, signing the teenager following the Latics' relegation to League One after they entered administration.

Gelhardt featured 18 times in the Championship last season but is yet to make his Leeds United debut, instead mainly featuring in the Whites' development squad.

Whilst Leeds are not expected to make any major signings for their first-team in January, with Marcelo Bielsa instead preferring to operate in the summer market, they could well be adding further prospects to their youth squad.

The Athletic's Phil Hay has confirmed reports that Leeds are eyeing up Gelhardt's former Wigan teammate Sean McGurk and Derby County's Louie Sibley.

Football Insider, meanwhile, have reported that Sibley's Rams teammate Jason Knight is also of interest.

Leeds were previously interested in McGurk in the summer but, unlike Gelhardt, failed to get a deal over the line to sign the 17-year-old.

Yet they are said to retain an interest in the youngster, who has also attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur in the past.

With Wigan yet to find new owners after a proposed takeover fell through earlier this month, they could be willing to listen to offers for the attacking midfielder - although their administrators opted to keep hold of McGurk in the summer due to fears over losing too much talent.

Whilst McGurk has not had any experience of senior competitive football, the Whites' Derby targets, Sibley and Knight, have plenty.

Attacking midfielder Sibley attracted attention last season by netting a hat-trick in Derby's 3-2 win over Millwall, scoring five times in all competitions overall.

The 19-year-old has played 17 times for the Rams so far this season.

Knight, who operates in a similar position to Sibley, has racked up 27 appearances in the Championship this season, netting three times.

With Knight also 19, it is unlikely that any of the trio would go straight into Bielsa's first-team if signed, but instead bolster an already promising-looking development side.
