Leeds United miss out on sealing transfer to sign highly-rated Sunderland youngster

Leeds United have fallen short in the race to sign highly-rated Sunderland striker Joe Hugill, with Manchester United poised to seal the signing of the youngster, according to our sister title, the Manchester Evening News.

Leeds, alongside the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers, had expressed a strong interest in landing the 16-year-old this summer, but are now set to be beaten by the Old Trafford club, who are poised to sign the teenager for £300,000.

Hugill, who does not turn 17-years-old until October, was also subject of interest from clubs in German but was not presented with any concrete offers.

Despite his tender age, Hugill has been making quite a name for himself in Sunderland's academy this season and scored twice on his debut for the Under-23s in the Premier League 2 in a 4-2 reverse to West Ham United.

It is reported that Manchester United could include Hugill in their academy intake ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Following last week's latest Premier League meeting to discuss how the season could be concluded, it was announced that the Under-23s and Under-18s campaigns have been scrapped, though it remains unclear if the FA Youth Cup will be allowed to reach its conclusion.

Leeds' Under-23 were 3rd in the PDL2 North table whilst the Under-18s, who had experienced a disappointing campaign, were down in 10th place in their respective division.
