Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips told to ignore Manchester United and replace Jordan Henderson at Liverpool

Pundit Paul Merson believes Kalvin Phillips should join Liverpool over Manchester United as he's an 'ideal replacement' for Jordan Henderson.

A product of the Leeds academy, Phillips has impressed in recent seasons and he's now a regular starter for both club and country.

Both Liverpool and United have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old, but Merson believes Anfield would be the ideal destination should he depart his boyhood club.

"Kalvin Phillips should join Liverpool, not Manchester United," he wrote in his column for the Daily Star.

"I think he'd suit Liverpool more than United. And if they are paying big money for him I don't see Jordan Henderson playing every week.

"I'm not saying that would be the end of Henderson. He's a good pro. Never lets you down. But he's not getting any younger.

"I think Phillips could learn from having him around. I think Phillips would become a much better player at Liverpool.

"If he goes to Anfield he will still be remembered as a Leeds United hero. But if he goes to Old Trafford that all goes out the window.

"And a Leeds United player going to Manchester United? Wow. Better start well! That's pressure."

Phillips is still under a long-term contract at Leeds as his current deal expires in 2024.

Henderson also signed a new deal with Liverpool in the summer that keeps him at Anfield until 2025.

Aged 32, the Reds captain remains a key player for manager Jurgen Klopp and is showing no signs of slowing down.

He's missed just one Premier League game this season as he was absent from the squad that faced Norwich on matchday one due to his involvement in Euro 2020.
