Leeds United midfielder confirms season-ending surgery as he takes first step on comeback trail

Injury may have ended Mateusz Bogusz’s promising loan spell away from Leeds United, but their young talent has taken his first step forward after surgery.

The 20-year-old was in the midst of a season-long stay with Ibiza in Segunda Division, Spain’s second tier, when he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Bogusz had delivered four goals and five assists from the 22 appearances he had made for the island outfit before injury struck.

Taking to Instagram, Bogusz has now confirmed surgery in London on his knee this week, captioning the image of him in a hospital bed: “All good. One day closer to comeback.”

Bogusz’s contract at Elland Road expires in the summer of 2023, though last summer he seemed to suggest there is the option to extend it for another year.

Marcelo Bielsa was asked by LeedsLive about the Poland youth international earlier this season when the playmaker was in good form.

“Like you well said, he is performing well,” he said. “He’s in the second division of Spain, which is an important level.

“Normally, his performances there and with the under-21s of Poland, they have him in good form.

“We analyse game to game and at the adequate moment the evaluations will be made and the adequate decision will be made [on his future].”
