Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa furious with Liverpool advantage

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has hit out at what he perceives as an unfair advantage for clubs who will be allowed a small number of fans for home matches from next week.

Liverpool and other Premier League teams will welcome supporters after the move was announced by the government on Thursday afternoon.

Half of the Premier League will have fans but both Manchester clubs, Wolves, Newcastle United, Leeds United, West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield United, Leicester City and Burnley are set to remain empty as they are in Tier 3 of the new coronavirus guidelines.

The other 10 clubs are in Tier 2, with no Premier League club in a Tier 1 area at this moment in time.

Anfield will have 2,000 supporters inside for the game against Wolves in nine days, though had the match been played in the Midlands, there would not have been anyone allowed in.

And that has led Bielsa to question the 'common sense' of the decision.

The Leeds boss said: "The power of each club corresponds to that club so there could be a rule that fans are not allowed in all stadiums or everyone is allowed to have them.

"The question shouldn’t be about the consequences of being in this category or that category, it should be about trying to maintain the competition as equal as possible with things that are controllable.

"I’m just applying common sense. The presence of fans has an effect on the result, but the competition says that people who are in higher rates of infection will be penalised.

"There is the case that these clubs should not be punished because they are in an area with a higher risk of infection."

Burnley boss Sean Dyche was not in agreement with Bielsa, however, even though Burnley are in a Tier 3 area., meaning they too will have no supporters inside Turf Moor.

"Any fans getting into stadiums is a start, hopefully a very positive start for what comes next," he said.

"Home or away, having any fans in the stadium is great. We’ve been waiting a long time, they’ve been waiting a long time.

"We totally understand why of course, I think it will be a very good thing for football.

"We can only hope things will accelerate due to vaccinations etc, etc. They’ve said they will revisit it on the 16th, so we will wait and see."
