Leeds United loan out promising youngster as Marcelo Bielsa trims down his squad

Alfie McCalmont has signed a season-long loan deal with League Two Oldham Athletic and hopes to make his debut tomorrow.

The 20-year-old midfielder finalised the deal with Harry Kewell’s side at Boundary Park today and is eligible to play at home to Crawley Town tomorrow.

After establishing himself as a central figure in the club’s under-23s, McCalmont rose to prominence with Northern Ireland, playing for their under-21 and senior teams.

Last week, head coach Marcelo Bielsa said he was open to the club’s youngsters going out on loan for more senior opportunities if they were not available at Elland Road.

McCalmont has made two appearances for United’s first team. Each came last season in the EFL Cup against Salford City and Stoke City.

The midfielder signed a new contract at Elland Road only last month, committing himself to the club until the summer of 2024.

Oldham have made a poor start to the season under Kewell, losing each of their opening League Two matches.
