Leeds United linked to Macedonian who fell out with Gennaro Gattuso looking to fill Alioski role

Leeds United's worst-kept secret is their pursuit of a replacement for Gjanni Alioski this summer as the Macedonian has just a matter of weeks left on his Elland Road contract.

Upon arriving in West Yorkshire, Alioski was an endeavouring left-winger but under Marcelo Bielsa has been converted into a left full-back.

For the most part last season - Alioski's first in the Premier League - the 29-year-old was reliable, but was prone to the occasional questionable decision.

Throughout his time at Leeds, he has been adored for his zany personality, often appearing in club media videos playing up to the camera or being a nuisance to teammates.

This summer could well see him depart for pastures new and consequently, Leeds will require a replacement.

It's unlikely but if Leeds are after another firebrand Macedonian, then Elmas may just be their man.

Currently at Napoli in Serie A, Elmas is the great hope of the Macedonian national team - who will take part in their first major tournament this summer at UEFA Euro 2020.

Since joining Napoli from Turkish side Fenerbahce, Elmas has struggled to become a regular and according to Gazzetto dello Sport, the Italian giants have 'no intention of redeeming' him beyond this summer.

Elmas is predominantly a left-sided central midfielder in a 4-3-3, which in Leeds United terms makes him a No. 8 - although he has been known to play on the left flank on occasion, but not as a full-back.

Last season, the 21-year-old made just three starts under Gennaro Gattuso at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, formerly referred to as Stadio San Paolo before the legendary Argentine's untimely death.

In The Athletic's Euro 2020 preview - dubbed The Radar - Elmas was linked with a move to Elland Road, building on links which arose back in December.

Elmas reportedly had a falling out with ex-boss Gattuso back in April, according to Macedonian news outlet Sloboden Pecat.

"Gattuso sent our player to the locker room prematurely, and the reason is the insufficient commitment to the training," a report read, which does not exactly bode well for his Leeds United links.

However, Gattuso - renowned as a fiery individual during his playing days - is notorious for training ground spats with players.

Everton midfielder Allan, Faouzi Ghoulam and Mario Rui have also been on the receiving end of a Gattuso scolding during his tenure as Napoli boss.

"It is also added that Elmas is a big "dilemma" in the team, on the one hand his technical skills are unquestionable, but on the other he can not find continuity," the report added.

Given the majority of Elmas' appearances are in the closing stages of games, it is hard to assess how he would adapt to the Premier League or which role he would play.

That said, he is an adept dribbler, possessing the ability to beat players in the centre of the park.

As for Leeds replacing their zany Macedonian with a younger version and a point to prove, it could well be one of Victor Orta's more daring transfer plots - but only at a knockdown price given Napoli's selling stance and Elmas' lack of minutes.

For now, it remains a speculative link.
