Leeds United link to Man City target dashed as Napoli open talks for Legia Warsaw starlet

Napoli have opened talks over a deal to sign Michal Karbownik.

Gianluca Di Marzio claims that Napoli are the Italian side most interested in the Legia Warsaw defender, having held discussions with the player's representatives and the club.

It is a blow to Leeds United, who have previously been reported to be interested in the 19-year-old, who has been capped to under-19 level for Poland.

Yet Karbownik's long-term future does not lie at Elland Road, even if Leeds do win the race for him in the short-term.

Sport.PL recently reported that Karbownik is mainly a target of Manchester City, with Leeds set to take him immediately on loan if he does move to the Etihad Stadium.

Leeds cannot afford to sign Karbownik permanently, but could fancy their chances should Man City secure his services and then send him on loan to Elland Road.

It would be a similar deal to that of Jack Harrison, who City signed from New York City in 2018 before loaning to Leeds for the past two years.

Karbownik has notched six assists from left-back this season.

Despite Napoli's interest, he is not currently high on their list of priorities, with the Italian side first keen to sort out contract extensions for their current players.

Red Bull Salzburg are also said to be keeping tabs on Karbownik's situation.

Yet, in Poland, there are question marks over whether Salzburg could afford Karbownik.

Salzburg's approach of spending less on a player for a higher sell-on percentage is said to be at odds with Legia Warsaw's desire for a fee up front.
