Leeds United line-ups to face Leicester City as Liam Cooper returns and Raphinha makes his case

Leeds United are back in action on Monday night when they host Leicester City in a mouthwatering Elland Road clash.

Marcelo Bielsa's side will go into the match high on confidence following their 3-0 win at Aston Villa last time out and are also boosted by the return to fitness of skipper Liam Cooper.

But after such an encouraging win against the Villans, how should Bielsa's starting XI look? Our reporters share their teams here...

Beren Cross

How much do you want Luke Ayling and Mateusz Klich in their best positions? They seem to be the major questions guiding team selection on Monday night.

Based on the reaction to Marcelo Bielsa’s open-ended comments in Friday’s press conference there’s been a fair bit of conjecture around Liam Cooper not being recalled.

Not for me. The captain comes straight back in if he’s fit and we get Ayling rampaging up that right flank, please. Stuart Dallas can go back to the left and Ezgjan Alioski can be our ace in the hole.

Beren @ Villa 0-3 Leeds

I’m a huge fan of Jamie Shackleton’s and as much as I would love to give him his 16th start I just want Klich working his magic further up the field as the link-up man.

I don’t want the Polish international playing as the defensive midfielder to make space for Shackleton. Pascal Struijk may have had the early hook last week, but he’s not become a bad player overnight.

We know from past experience with Kalvin Phillips a first-half withdrawal does not mean a long-term hangover.

Aside from those roles it’s hard to want to change much after that romp at Villa Park. Desperate to see more of Raphinha and Pablo Hernandez, but there just isn’t room at the inn.

Beren’s XI: Meslier; Ayling, Koch, Cooper, Dallas; Struijk; Costa, Klich, Rodrigo, Harrison; Bamford.

It would be very easy to say that the 11 players who blew the previously undefeated Aston Villa away in the second half at Villa Park last weekend should get the nod again, but I think fit-again Liam Cooper needs to return. Leeds won't come up against many better strikers than Jamie Vardy this season, with the forward already having netted seven times this term. Cooper's presence will therefore be vital at the back.

That also means Bielsa can move Luke Ayling back out wide in a match where Leeds' counter-attacks will be one of their big weapons. With that in mind I'd also opt for Raphinha to be handed a first start as we saw just how much of an attacking threat he can be when he starred for the under-23s last weekend. I admit it's harsh on Helder Costa, but it will ensure Leeds will have another strong bench, with the Portuguese sat alongside Pablo Hernandez giving Bielsa two game-changing options.

The other talking point is whether or not Pascal Struijk starts again in defensive midfield. As Beren points out above, the Dutchman does not deserve to be written off yet and anyone who has watched what Bielsa has done with these Leeds players will back him to come back stronger from his early substitution last time out.

Joe's XI: Meslier; Ayling, Koch, Cooper, Dallas; Struijk; Raphinha, Klich, Rodrigo, Harrison; Bamford.

Now it’s your turn to have your say on how you think Leeds United should line up at Villa Park on Friday night.
