Leeds United line-ups for Crystal Palace with Jamie Shackleton axed and Raphinha pushing

Leeds United visit Crystal Palace this afternoon in their eighth Premier League match of the campaign.

As ever, head coach Marcelo Bielsa has an array of decisions to make with his starting line-up and the unique proposition the Eagles offer.

Our Whites experts have picked out which direction they would go in at Selhurst Park today.

Beren Cross

Injuries and COVID-19 have really cut back on Bielsa’s starting options in the past few weeks, leaving little room for manoeuvre on features like these.

The biggest question mark surrounds Raphinha, but even if he does prove his fitness, I would not start him anyway.

That takes your attention to Monday night’s substitutes’ bench and what options there may be there to nip a 4-1 loss in the bud.

Jamie Shackleton and Pascal Struijk have traded difficult starts in the last two games and it feels like it would be right to switch them again here.

Critically, I want to see Mateusz Klich more advanced and alongside Pablo Hernandez in their more customary central partnership.

I am fully expecting the hosts to put 10 men behind the ball and wait for turnovers to unleash Wilfried Zaha on the break today.

Klich et al are well versed in their roles and duties when it comes to breaking down opposition like that.

Bring Klich forward and Struijk back in as the defensive midfielder. Yes, he was rash at Aston Villa, but we know he can do a job there.

Tyler Roberts, Ezgjan Alioski and Ian Poveda do not yet look worthy of supplanting any of the wide or attacking options who started on Monday.

Beren’s XI: Meslier; Ayling, Koch, Cooper, Dallas; Struijk; Costa, Klich, Hernandez, Harrison; Bamford.

Joe Mewis

With Palace offering a similar counter-attacking outlet to the one Leicester undid Leeds with in the shape of Zaha, it's clear Bielsa needs to tinker with his midfield.

With Diego Llorente still out, the defence continues to pick itself without too much debate, but ahead of them the question is whether or not to bring back Struijk.

The young Dutchman didn't become a bad player overnight and his presence in defensive midfield has the knock-on effect of players playing in their strongest positions.

Klich's presence was missed in the number eight role against the Foxes and if he is in his usual position, he will help Hernandez have more of an impact on the game in Rodrigo's absence.

It's the same again on the flanks, with Jack Harrison and Helder Costa hopeful of getting joy out wide against what has been a very narrow Palace side in recent weeks. Poveda and fit-again Raphinha will provide good ammunition from the bench.

Joe's XI: Meslier; Ayling, Koch, Cooper, Dallas; Struijk; Costa, Klich, Hernandez, Harrison; Bamford.
