Leeds United line-up for Man City as Joe Gelhardt forces his recall with experience benched

The cupboard remains largely bare for Marcelo Bielsa when he comes to name his side for Leeds United’s trip to Manchester City.

Nobody new has been added to the absentee list from Saturday in London, but nobody has been removed for the away day at Etihad Stadium.

Predictably, that means there is not a huge amount I can do with the line-up at his disposal. Pep Guardiola’s side have favoured a 4-3-3 this term, which should make for a Leeds 4-1-4-1.

Joe Gelhardt is the one player who did not start on Saturday worthy of mixing up the XI for Tuesday night.

The teenager’s goal was just the latest scrap of evidence which underlines his quality and potential as a Premier League striker.

Mateusz Klich played a part in the build-up to Gelhardt’s equaliser, but generally did not have an influence on the match before his late penalty concession.

It is tough to make a case for the Poland international’s recall, especially after the abuse he received on Saturday night.

The question then is where you fit Gelhardt in? He comes in as the striker, so where do you play Daniel James?

Out wide of course, where Raphinha is immovable, so it’s the Jack Harrison debate once more. There really has not been a lot in it across recent weeks between him and James.

In their good games, James has looked better, so he keeps his spot out wide, for me. Harrison makes way for Gelhardt.

The rest of the side picks itself if Klich and Harrison are on the bench. I would play Jamie Shackleton at right-back and bring Stuart Dallas into the centre alongside Tyler Roberts.

Shackleton has always looked at his best from that role, for me, while Dallas was so effective from the centre at City last season.

I would rather have Shackleton in there than Luke Ayling, if that means Charlie Cresswell has to partner Diego Llorente in the centre.

Cresswell was impressive against West Ham United, but in these circumstances, where Leeds may be under the cosh for prolonged periods, I would prefer Ayling’s leadership and nous.

Beren’s XI: Meslier; Shackleton, Ayling, Llorente, Firpo; Forshaw; Raphinha, Dallas, Roberts, James; Gelhardt.
